Creaky Voice as a Function of Tonal Categories and Prosodic Boundaries
This study looks into the distribution of creaky voice in Mandarin in continuous speech. A creaky voice detector was used to automatically detect the appearance of creaky voice in a large-scale Mandarin corpus (Sinica COSPRO corpus). As the prosodic information has been annotated in the corpus, we were able to look at the distribution of creaky voice as a function of the interaction between ton...

There are few studies on the role of phonation cues in the perception of lexical tones in tonal languages where pitch is the primary dimension of contrast. This study shows that listeners are sensitive to creaky phonation in native tonal perception in Cantonese, a language in which the low falling tone, Tone 4, has anecdotally been reported to be sometimes creaky. However, the effects of laryngealization on f0 feature extraction for tonal recognition, as well as the potential of laryngealization as a feature for improvin...
